Life in translation
The unique life I’ve led equips me to understand and convey subtleties in ways few other language professionals can.
After studying literature and creative writing at Whitworth University, I worked for a wilderness conservation organization in my hometown of Carbondale, Colorado. Then I stuck out my thumb and started heading south toward Latin America.
Over a decade later, I’m living in Cochabamba, Bolivia, in a cob home I built along one of the Amazon’s most distant headstreams. I’ve learned ancient Andean sikuri music, served on the community leadership council in my rural Quechua neighborhood, and roamed far and wide on my 125 cc Honda motorcycle.
Because of my immersion in the daily life of Latin America, I can offer clients a level of nuance and understanding of Spanish and the cultural context of the region that can’t be gained through academic study alone.
I also stay connected to my native language and culture through yearly stints in Colorado (where I make sure to get in a few backcountry telemark turns!). I keep my writing skills sharp and my ear attuned to the ever-evolving English language.
